Thanksgiving Special: We're Funded + Stretch Goals
over 2 years ago – Sun, Nov 28, 2021 at 04:09:17 PM

Happy Thanksgiving!

With this update we wanted to wish all you beautiful backers a very happy Thanksgiving! We have a lot to be thankful for considering that we've reached our initial funding goal — which means issue 2 is now a reality! Thank you to everyone who supported us and believed in helping bring the World of Wa to life!

Here's some interesting milestones to celebrate with:

  • Reached our goal of $10,000 in exactly 2 weeks!
  • Supported by over 240 backers so far!
  • The Story So Far Bundle is the most backed tier at nearly 40% of backers!
  • The Digital Bundle is the second most backed tier at around 20% of backers!
  • Compared to our first campaign, we have 31 more backers so far!
  • There are 15 days left to go in the campaign to reach the stretch goals below!

Stretch Goals

Now that we reached our funding goal, we can unveil the first set of stretch goals we have planned for the campaign. These goals are free upgrades to existing rewards, so the more backers we get and funding we can raise, the more everyone benefits. Here are the next three stretch goals and a breakdown of what each one provides.

If we reach $12,000, all copies of issue 2 (both physical and digital) will get added pages of bonus content. This will be 2 additional lore pages and 4 extended bestiary pages (2 for each of the bestiary entries at the back of issue 2). If you're curious to know what these might look like, here's an example of a lore page from issue 1 and a page from the digital bestiary.

Pages 40 & 41 from Issue 1's Bonus Content
The Wanyuudo from the Digital Bestiary

At $14,000, we will upgrade the Youkai pins to have new features. The Yuurei pin will feature a glow-in-the-dark effect on the floating wisps and eyes. The Wanyuudo pin will feature glitter effects on the flames.

Glow in the Dark Yuurei (Left) & Glitter Wanyuudo (Right)

At $16,000, we're adding Issue 1.5, The Fall of the Inugami, to the beginning of Issue 2. In addition, we'll be including a bonus Inugami Spirit sticker, free for all physical backers! This extra-large 3.8" premium sticker features gold mirror highlights, and a soft touch matte finish.

Campaign Progress

As of this update, we're just $2,116 away from reaching our goal and 34 backers away from 200! With AnimeNYC this weekend, we're hoping we can clear our goal and reveal our plans for stretch goals by the time we get back!

AnimeNYC!

As conventions are making their return, this will be our first time back at a convention together as a team.

Starting tomorrow, we'll be tabling at AnimeNYC at our illustrator Hammling's booth in Artist's Alley; table D7! We'll have books and goodies from Issue #1 of our campaign; so if you're attending, come by and say hi!

You can find us by this handy dandy banner!

Projects We Love

Here are a couple more projects we found and wanted to share with you!

 The Few and Cursed

If you're a fan of Westerns like The Dark Tower or Hellsing check out this awesome series by Felipe Cagno. From the vibrant action to the the blood curdling monsters, The Few and Cursed keeps your heart racing from start to finish. Check it out!

The Few and Cursed is a supernatural post-apocalyptic western. It  can almost be described as a Buffy the Vampire Slayer meets the Old West with a pinch of The Witcher for good measure.

It's been seventy years already since most of the water on the planet was simply gone overnight in a mysterious apocalyptic event. There's good water to be made hunting down beasts and monsters and Curse Chasers are always eager to help those in need (for the right flask of water of course). Enter the tough and mysterious Redhead. Red is a hardened survivor traveling from town to town looking for  scared whispers in the night and the right people to pay her to get rid  of those whispers.

The Few and Cursed has had several successful Kickstarter campaigns  and now returns for a new season and an exciting LIVE ACTION teaser!

IN THE LAND OF THE DRAGON #1 - Cyberpunk Fantasy Comic Book

A cyberpunk story crossed with a cool blend of magic. If you're a fan of series like Cowboy Bebop or Blade Runner give In the Land of the Dragon  a read. Fast spells and fast bikes, In the Land of the Dragon has it all!

In the Land of the Dragon is a cyberpunk comic  book set in a world not unlike our own, except that magic exists as an  equal force with science and is used to start - or finish - wars that  devastate this world. Mercenaries like Kenzo work for various corporations as guns for hire  to carry out their dreadful will. The most powerful of these  corporations, "The Dreamless," has commissioned Kenzo to take this child from their arch-enemies, "The Children of the Kingdom of Heaven."

As the secret this child bears comes to light, Kenzo will have to  choose whether to follow the code of the mercenaries or put the child  first to save her from the "destiny" these corporations have laid upon  her.

Kawaii Mythical Creatures Hard Enamel Pins

Between crafting our own and collecting ones from other artists, we absolutely love pins. And as obvious fans of mythology and folklore, we wanted to highlight an enamel pin campaign focused on mythical creatures with cute designs by artist Serytama!

"This is me second mythical creatures Kickstarter so there's been a bit of an art change since my last Kickstarter and personally I think I love my new art style more than before ^_^! I still love all my other artworks for the mythical creatures though but I think having a new style is also great for me to explore :). I've been wanting to do this project for a long time now since the beginning of the year but things got kinda rough throughout XD, but I'm back on track to finally starting it finally. I will be unlocking any designs myself if they don't get unlocked since these pins were something I wanted made for a long time." ~ Serytama

We're Halfway There!

Livin' on a Prayer!

We've crossed the halfway mark. Woohoo! Thank you to all our backers. Without your support we wouldn't be able to make this awesome thing we love. Here's a couple things worth nothing for our first 3 days:

  • Raised over $5,000!
  • Supported by over 100 backers!
  • The Story So Far Bundle is the most backed tier!

Press Kit

For anyone interested in writing about our project or would like to share our project with writers/ or journalists, we've put together a press kit that has everything they need to get started. You can find it here: Press Kit

Shipping Info

For those curious, here some additional info on how we'll be shipping the comic. Issue 2 will be bagged, boarded and shipped in a 8"x12" comic book mailer, ensuring that they arrive in pristine condition.

It's all about the 3 B's: Bag, Board & Box.

And for the shipping estimates we promised, here's the costs for several tiers in USD:

As we are still currently under a global pandemic, shipping may still be affected; so please remember that these are rough estimates and are subject to change.

Projects We Love

Part of the fun of having a Kickstarter campaign is finding and sharing other creators projects. We Always feel very lucky to be receiving the support and love from the Kickstarter community we've built and like spreading the love. So check out these awesome campaigns we found!

Theseus: Volume 1

As a fan of both western and eastern mythologies, we're excited to read this comedic retelling of the hero Theseus by Jordan Holt. Theseus is a fresh take on Greek mythology, with a whimsical humor that is fun and lighthearted. This is the first Kickstarter by Jordan Holt, so if you share a love for mythology, you should check out and support his campaign!

Theseus: Volume 1  is  a satirical retelling of Theseus' journey to Athens after learning that  his father is Aegeus, the Athenian king. Theseus sets out on foot to  claim his birthright, encountering bandits and beasts across the landscape of Ancient Greece. This comedic version of the story imagines Theseus as an optimistic and absent-minded teenager swept up in accidental fortunes, the mischief and schemes of bored deities, and his own, ever-growing legend.

 PILCUYO, A Peruvian Cyberpunk Saga

If you love cyberpunk, we got a story for you! With a cool gritty dystopian aesthetic, beautiful color palettes and unique animals augmented with cyberpunk prosthetics is just a tiny piece of the awesome Peruvian Cyberpunk saga Pilcuyo.

The dystopian saga reaches its climax with a clash between cyborgs, robots, soldiers & mercenaries. The campaign offers the full catalogue of the Peruvian Cyberpunk  Books: PILCUYO, PUNO & MANU and previous One-shots TRUJILLO &  L1MA. As well as original art, comic pages and sketches. Latest stretch goal is a PinUp by Artyom Trakhanov!

Dare to enter the world of Peruvian Cyberpunk!

The Bai Ze & the Book of Monsters - Anthology and 5eCampaign

Creator David C loves D&D, especially reading all the little facts and entries in the Monster Manual. If you do too, check out The Bai Ze & the Book of Monsters by Anthony Christou!

The Bai Ze & Book of monsters is a 5E Rpg Campaign & Comic book from Luminous Ages

Luminous Ages has always been highly influenced by many real-world  cultures and mythologies. The Bai Ze and the Book of Monsters is no  exception with many of the monsters, races, and NPCs inspired by Chinese  Mythology.  The book of monsters has been stolen by the villains of the  Luminous Ages world from the Yellow Emperor (Huang Di) and the Bai Ze a  goat-like lion creature.

Issue #1 Credits Page. Thanks to all our supporters who made it happen!

Artist Spotlight: Jerry Ma

For this update we want to feature one of our variant cover artists, Jerry Ma. Jerry has been a close friend and huge supporter of ours so we hope you will give him some love.

Jerry Ma, David Chun and Fletcher Chu-Fong

Jerry Ma is a New York based graphic designer/illustrator who is best known for his work as one of the founders of the groundbreaking graphic novel series Secret Identities and Shattered and most recently he successfully launched The Monkey King: A Chinatown Odyssey on Kickstarter.

Jerry's proudest work is of celebrating 41 Asian Americans through portraits he illustrated for Asian Heritage Month in 2020, in light of all the racism towards Asian Americans during the Covid-19 pandemic. His most notable works include NBPA China, Kangol Hong Kong, B2Music, VIBE Hong Kong, The Jeremy Lin Foundation, Linsanity the Documentary and Late Life the Chien Ming Wang Documentary. Jerry has spoken as a keynote speaker on Asian American awareness at events ranging from Rutgers University to The Smithsonian Museum, as well as hosted his own art galleries at the Walter Reade Theatre at Lincoln Center and the Pearl River Mart Gallery.

Monkey King: A Chinatown Odyssey

Get your hands on Jerry Ma's latest book, which was successfully funding here on Kickstarter! It's a modern retelling of The Journey to the West set in modern day NY Chinatown. It's action packed, full of humor and iconic locations; you can really feel Jerry Ma's love of NY Chinatown in every page.

The tale of the Monkey King is one that has been cherished for generations, but it has never been told like this. New York is falling apart; the Empress of Chinatown has turned her back on the City. Tripitaka the monk must locate Monkey, Pigsy and Sandy to help her make the journey West to San Fransisco in hopes of finding enlightenment to then go back and save New York from itself!

Variant Cover inspiration

"From just an initial idea to the fully created world we get to hold in our hands now. I got a sneak peak of Monkey and Peach book 2 where David and Hamm take us through an amazing fantastic ride full of magic and mythology. Their passion for telling stories inspires me and I was honored at having the chance to illustrate a cover for them."

"With Hamm’s artwork leading the way, it opened the door for me to merge both traditional watercolors with digital colors.  Hopefully this piece illustrates the energy and wonder that they have so carefully put into  their storytelling." - Jerry Ma

Projects We Love

Once again we are bringing you some cool projects we found through Kickstarter!

SCARLET RANGER: INHERITANCE PART ONE

As creators ourselves, we know how it feels to look up to the stories we grew up with - wanting to make something of our own and pushing towards that dream with the support of those around us; and that's why we're backing Ro Lamb's Scarlet Ranger!

SCARLET RANGER: INHERITANCE PART ONE is a superhero story about a young engineer who is dedicated to honoring the memory of his grandfather. But when a cyberterrorist threatens Royal City, he finds himself in a battle for the city. Ultimately, this is a story about family and how we find ourselves while honoring the traditions and legacies that came before us.

The Witch of Wickerson - Graphic Novel

It's the final countdown! Now's your last chance to back The Witch of Wickerson!

Having also spent an entire month locked in a cave creating an ink a day, I know what it's like to not see sunlight for the sake of finishing a drawing challenge; so I'm happy to support a fellow cave dweller, and backed this campaign created by Derek Laufman!

From the creator of RUINWORLD and BOT-9 comes a new Graphic Novel from Derek Laufman. The Witch of Wickerson is a twisted dark fairytale described as the SECRET OF NIHM meets ATTACK ON TITAN, about a Witch who terrorizes a community of small animals. What started as a page-a-day challenge for Inktober 2021, this haunting tale will be collected into a Hardcover book with the help of Kickstarter supporters!

 From Gamers Magazine Issue 3

All of us on the Monkey and Peach team are gamers at heart. And nothing is more true than for Azroix, who has backed nearly 400 projects on Kickstarter with 90% of them being gaming related.  One of these projects is From Gamers Magazine, and independent gaming magazine that's looking to recreate the joy of opening a physical magazine to see reviews, discussion and previews of modern games. If you want to to support upcoming gaming journalists, this is a great way to do so!

Issue 3's Cover
Interior Spreads from the Magazine

As a supporter of the magazine, Azroix worked with From Gamers creator Andrew Smith to get some ad space for Monkey and Peach right on the back cover of the latest issue! How awesome is that?!

Awesome Start to the Campaign!
over 2 years ago – Sat, Nov 13, 2021 at 07:25:53 AM

Welcome!

Welcome everyone and thank you so much for supporting issue 2 of Monkey and Peach! Kickstarter honored us with their Projects We Love designation and we're 40% to our funding goal! We are incredibly grateful that so many of you believe not just in the project, but in our talents as creators. It means a great deal and we will do our best to meet everyone's expectations!

Join the Discord

For those of you new to Monkey and Peach, we have a discord server where we post any important updates, which is especially useful if you're worried about missing Kickstarter's emails.

Early Bird Deals

Just a reminder that the Early Bird Deals for the campaign end in about 50 hours (Friday), so if you know someone that'll enjoy Monkey and Peach and is interested in saving a little money, let them know by sharing the campaign.

Shipping

Many of you have asked about shipping. We'll be putting together regional pricing estimates for domestic and international backers. While it won't be exact, it should give everyone a good ballpark figure of what to expect shipping costs to be once the campaign concludes. Look for the estimates in this Friday's update, which we will then add to the campaign page.

Stretch Goals

If you're curious about whether we have any stretch goals on the horizon, rest assured we do. We'll be announcing them when we're close to our funding goal to help push us over the line. We're hoping our campaign does well enough that we can provide some awesome perks to all backers.

From the Community

One of our biggest supporters are our good friends Ray Chou and Vincenzo Ferriero, whose feedback and guidance helped us tremendously back when we started Monkey and Peach #1 as the new kids on the block; as well as collaborating with our artist Hammling on creating variant covers and artwork for Glow, a post-apocalyptic techno fantasy adventure story.

Ray and Vincenzo are currently running their own campaign and have done amazing work crafting an immersive world filled with intricately designed airships, intense dogfights, adventure and war in Skies of Fire #8. If you're into dieselpunk military aesthetics, we wholeheartedly recommend you check it out!
